Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Nov 9th & Nov 16th
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 19, 2008
I have been a bit behind my my stat posting. I was married last weekend, so I blame my lack of posts on that.
I have to combine the last two weeks results posts into one, as I didn’t post the week before either.
So here are the results from Nov 3rd to Nov 9th:

and also Nov 10th to Nov 16th:

I did a quick check on Joel Comm’s Adsense Secrets site and found that he was still giving away his awesome book for free. I suggest going and picking it up before you have to pay for it again!
Float Your Adsense Ads Left or Right Within Your Blog Posts
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 9, 2008
I have been getting a bunch of emails from people on the the heck I float my Adsense ads to the left or right of the content of my posts. I use this technique quite heavily as I think it is a great position for the Adsense ads to a ton of views, and then of course a ton of hits.
Now this snippet of code is simple little bit of CSS that I thought was common knowledge. But I guess sometimes when you are not coming from a web design background this isn’t so common. Now this bit of code will work on a Wordpress blog, and any “regular” website. I am not sure how to implement this code on Blogger, or any of the other free blog services, so my instruction is for wordpress.
First off, here is the code:
<div style=”float:left; padding:5px;”>
[place your adsense code here]
</div>
Now all you have to do is place this bit of code for the page that you want the ads to float to the left or right of the post text. For most Wordpress blogs you would place this code directly after the:
<div class=”entrybody”>
You will need to add this code to every page that has a post ie: single post, main index, search results, archives, etc
You can see above the float:left. If you want it to be on the right then change left to right. It’s that easy.

Joel Comm Can Eat at My Blog For Free Anytime
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 5, 2008
You know when you go to a great restaurant, and they have pictures of the celebs that have dined at their establishment.
I always imagine, the owner coming out and walking up to the celeb and saying: “Ahh, Mr Deniro, your meal is on the house. Please sit down and enjoy this private booth. Our chef will create something special for you.”
And then when dinner is done the celeb is photographed and the put up on the wall. Usually the celeb will sign the photo with some kind of personal greeting like: “Tony, the veal veal parmigiana was exquisite.”
Well today I was thinking of putting up a photo gallery on the wall because the top dog in the adsense world, just stopped by my blog for some spaghetti and meatballs. That’s right kids, THE Joel Comm stopped by the Living on Adsense Blog. Whether he spent some time here or not, I don’t know. Whethere he enjoyed his time here or not. I don’t know.
I’m just pretty stoked that somehow the main man in my niche found my blog and stopped by. I just wish that I knew he was stopping by so that I could clean up the, tidy up, have a few good posts to show off instead of my boring earning stat posts that have been dominating my blog recently.
Anyways, I am pretty stoked that he at least was here, maybe on eday he will come back to try the veal…who knows.
Take My Keyword Research Advice: Slap a Guru
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 5, 2008
Ok so enough about me posting stats. I should really post about something useful. I mean that is why you came here right. To learn something.
Which I find really odd.
It’s been almost a year since I started blogging, and I guess I actually have learned a lot of info, what I can now pass onto you.
Right now I am working on documenting my process of starting a blog. Whether it works or not, well everyone’s blogging experiences are different, so what works for me might not work for you.
Todays post is going to be about keyword research, it is the first thing that I do after I have an idea for a blog. A lot of people seem to think that you need to shell out cash for a guru to tell you what to do, or for some great tool that will get you the best keywords.
I say screw it.
The next time you meet up with a keywords guru, just slap him or her right in the face and say “Rank this, bitch!.” Now you are set for keyword research success. Personally I only use 2 tools for my keyword research, both of which are free.
First off, whoever said that Google doesn’t tell you the value of what it pays publishers for certain keywords, needs another slap. To use this tool all you have to do is enter your keyword in the box, type in the captcha and then you will have a big list of related keywords, their search volume, and amount of competition represented by a graph.
From here, if you want you can select the “Show Estimated Average CPC” from the “Choose columns to display” drop down menu. This will show approximately what the publishers are bidding on the keywords.
This is a modified version of the free version of WordTracker that was created for the 30 Day Challenge. All you have to do is enter a keyword and press the ‘Hit Me’ button and you will be presented with a bunch of related keywords.
Once you have done the search you will see a big list, and on the right of this list you will see a column that is marked with a ‘G.’ If you click the graph icon in this column you will be presented with a pop up window that will show you the amount of competing websites, as well as the approximate daily hits that the #1 one spot will get.
Those are my tools. Completely free and totally useful. Now all you have to do is figure out how many competing websites you are willing to go up against vs how many hits the #1 spot gets. Most people say 30,000 competing sites with 100 hits to #1 daily is a good target. If that seems comfortable to you, then go for it. If you want more of a challenge find a site with more daily #1 hits, which will of course have more competing sites.
So I pose a question to you: How do you do your keywords research? Do you know of any other free tools?
Living on Adsense Blog October Updates
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 5, 2008

It has been one full month of Adsense Madness since I picked up a copy of Joel Comm’s Adsense Secrets 4. My previous month’s update for September only showed 6 good days of Adsense Earnings.
This October has been by far the best month of my Adsense earnings ever.
Here are the Stats:
Earnings for October: $40.45
I encourage all you Adsense junkies to go and pick up a copy of Adsense Secrets 4, for 2 reasons:
1. It’s pretty awesome. I totally blame my current blogging success on it.
2. It’s currently free.
Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Nov 2nd 2008
Posted by chris.whiteley on Nov 4, 2008
I feel like all I really have time to write about these days are my earnings. I had my Bachelor party this weekend, and with all the wedding preparation I really don’t have much blogging time. Thank goodness my other blogs are doing well on their own!
I also have to write a monthly earnings post after this which will probably consist of my posting an image and then writing: “This is my adsense blog earnings for October”
Well, maybe I will write a bit more. I find that the longer I am away from posting the great post ideas I have. Soon I will have time to put them all down and post them. But for now you are stuck to look at my earnings for Oct 27th to Nov 2nd

Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Oct 26th 2008
Posted by chris.whiteley on Oct 30, 2008
It seems that I am a few days behind on my Adsense blog earnings for this week. I took a screen shot Sunday night, and did not have a chance to post about it until right now. Of course right now I am at work and trying to write this post as fast as possible. I got in like 5 minutes early to write this.
I have to give you the condensed version of what my earnings posts usually are:
- earnings are looking good
- still working on my new Saving Money Tips blog
- download Adsense Secrets 4, it’s now free to download. Don’t be a goof, go download it (that’s what I used to really increase my earnings)
- take a look at last weeks stats:

Fish Don’t Fry in the Kitchen (and blogs don’t become awesome on their own)
Posted by chris.whiteley on Oct 25, 2008
Ok so there is a really good chance that I have gone Adsense bonkers in my posts recently, but for good reason. I mean I have actually started to make a bit of money from it. OF course now that I am movin’ on up, I find that the more successful I become, the more I check my stats. I figure that the Google Adsense OCD is permanent and has no cure.
So for this post instead instead of Google this and Adsense that, I have decided to write about…
Making your blog more awesome.
Some people would write things like ‘Increase Traffic to Your Blog in 5 Steps’ or ‘Cash in on Your RSS Feeds’ or ‘Top 5 Wordpress Plugins’ but not me, this is all about making your blog awesome.
So what defines awesome?
Well for me it is people coming to Living on Adsense, hanging out having a good time, learning something, and then come back for more the next day.
So for me to make this happen I have decided to do a couple of things that I think will help bring in people plus I need to measure the results. For this, I will measure the results in RSS subscribers. I am going to do something that a lot of people tell you not to do when you have less than 100 subscribers. I am going to share my RSS numbers near the top of the page beside the subscription link.
So here is how I am going to do it: Teach People. I am going to bounce from place to place sharing my blogging knowledge, then if someone learns from or enjoys the blogging wisdom I have dispensed, the will have the option to come to my blog and hang out, learn something, and then come back for more.
This isn’t entirely fleshed out yet. I just thought of it while watching and episode of The Jeffersons. Here is what I have fleshed.
Forums: 2 forums that I frequent quite often are The Bloggeries, and Adsense Chat. I plan on heading to those forums and effectively assisting as many people as I can. I will also start stellar threads that teach people. I will use content from my blog as a starting point for these threads.
Blog Catalog: I will search through the discussions and groups looking for people that may need help with some aspects of blogging or Adsense.
Yahoo Answers: I will scour through the unanswered questions and try to answer questions as best as I can and use my blog as a reference.
Twitter: I will get involved with Adsense and blog based discussions and provide insight wisdom to those crazy birds.
I am sure there are many other places that I could spread my wisdom and I will explore them as I find them. My goal is too have 75 RSS readers by the end of October. I encourage you to do the same, test it out, see if being a teacher will help make your blog more awesome.
C’mon…You Can Blend Those Google Adsense Units Betters
Posted by chris.whiteley on Oct 22, 2008
So now that I am back in full Adsense swing, I decided that it was time to create a new Adsense blog. I mean the reason why people make money with Adsense is because they have a bunch of blogs. Previously I had written that I was going to start an eBay blog. I am a big fan of eBay and could write about it until the cows come home. But I decided that I was currently more passionate about a different topic:
Saving Money.
Which is why I decide to create a Saving Money Tips blog. Due to the fact that I have a wedding, honeymoon, and student loan to pay for I have a ton of great ideas so I figure why not share them..
I eventually will post about my blog creation methods from start to finish, but today I wanted to cover one specific aspect of my new blog:
Kicking some Adsense Ass!
We all know the mantra: Blend your Adsense into your blog. Well I wanted to take a slightly different approach. I decided to design my blog around my adsense ads. I figured that it would be much easier to blend in the ads if my blog’s design was based around the adsense.
My main problem, and I had had this problem before was trying to match the fonts of the Adsense ad text, you can’t view it in the page source because it is just JavaScript. I have always just blindly tried to match the font, and had minimal success.
So I decided to do a little research…
And I found something even better than I had imagined. I had found a way to view the Adsense source code. When you view the actual Google Adense source code you can see what fonts are being used, what sizes, and so on.
So here is how you do it:
Right click on the adsense ads
In Firefox:
Select ‘This Frame’
and then select ‘View Frame Source’
In Internet Explorer:
Select ‘View Source’
It’s that easy. From here you just need to muck through all of the CSS code and find the font sizes and family etc. Some of the ad blocks have different CSS styles applied. Eventually I would like to create a reference sheet to show each ad blocks CSS style. But for now you will need to check it out on your own.
So if you are looking for inspiration, check out my latest blog on Saving Money Tips. I would love to hear some feedback on the site thus far.
Living on Adsense Blog Earning Stats for Oct 19th 2008
Posted by chris.whiteley on Oct 21, 2008
This week I learned an important lesson, well I actually knew it already, but this week just confirms it. The lesson is: the importance of testing.
This is the 4th week of testing ad position for my Warcraft blog. I added the adsense to the right hand side of my posts. I figured that this position would not be the best considering that people read left to right and most likely skip over the ads completely. I was right.
Between Monday and Friday I had ZERO clicks. I knew that I had to test and make sure that this position was not good, but after Friday I couldn’t take any more. I had to move the adsense ads back the more successful left hand side, which I think is where it will stay for some time, as I start to test ad colour.
These stats look a bit sad, as I had no clicks for 5 days, so the end dollar amount really represents just 2 days of adsense earnings.
Here are the stats for October 13th to 19th:
